Audi S4 Sedan & Avant in Depth

Audi
S4, new for 2009 and ready to play. Two versions of the same car, a
sedan capable of carrying people and luggage, and an Avant, just as
capable and adding skis plus family dog. At the heart of the S4 is a
throbbing petrol V6 displacing 3.0-litres in size. In their wisdom,
Audi saw it fit to install a supercharger to compliment this V6 motor,
thereby creating a bahnstormer of 245kW/ 333 hp. Maximum torque is
quoted at 440Nm. Although supercharged, the S4 is badged TFSI like the
turbo charged Audis.

Driving this power to all four wheels
is quattro, which under normal guise transfers 40 percent of torque to
the front and the rest to the rear, but can transfer a range of torque
at the speed of milliseconds, depending on road conditions. Taking all
this power in their stride are the two gearboxes offered; a standard
6-speed manual and an optional 7-speed double clutch S Tronic.

Suspension is a five five-link front axle and a self-tracking
trapezoidal-link rear axle. It uses several components made from
aluminium, so it is quite light as well. An optional sport differential
adds to the handling excitement, especially on take-off. Here the S4
sedan achieves a sprint time of 5.1 seconds from 0 100km/h, while the
Avant goes slightly slower with a time of 5.2 seconds. Both versions
are said to be limited to 250km/h, but we know Audi has on occasion,
understated this particular figure.

S4 comes kitted properly to lay its claim as the current leader of the A4 pack, until the arrival of the RS 4.
Sporting that muscular look thanks to special aprons, sill trims, rear
spoiler, quad tail pipes, 18-inch light-alloy wheels and the trademark
aluminium-look side mirrors, the S4 is distinctively different from
other models in the range. Interior convenience is provided in
packages, including MMI, various sound system choices that include the
top-of-the-range Bang & Olufsen, Bluetooth and iPod interface. At
50,950 Euros for the basic manual sedan, the S4 offers a very
attractive overall package for the family-oriented person with
thrill-seeking tendencies.
