Rear Brake & Fog Light Mod
This mod will result in the following: 1. Enables the driver and passenger side rear fogs to light up when the brakes are depressed. 2. Enables the ability for the driver to turn the rear fog light on seperately using the Euro Switch. Listed below are the parts and tools necessary to perform this modification. I have provided several links as examples where to purchase each item. NOTE: All electrical connections were joined together by soldering. If you don't own a soldering iron, then use plastic crimp style connectors which can be purchased at Pep Boys, Radio Shack, etc. WARNING: This mod was performed on my 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. I cannot gaurantee this will work on your vehicle. Work at your own risk. Installation times will vary upon the installer's experience. It took me about 40 minutes to complete this rear brake and fog light mod. | |

Procedure: Step 1: Cut one piece of wire, approximately 10 inches long. Crimp a small female connector to each end of the wire. Also, wrap a piece of electrical tape around each connector to prevent short circuiting. This will be the Jumper Cable you will later use in step #8. Step 2: Remove your factory light switch by pushing the switch in and turning clockwise between position 1 and 2. Then pull the switch out. Step 3: Cut a piece of wire approximately 10' and feed one end up the driverside kickpanel to where the Euroswitch will plug in. Step 4: Take the VW Wire part and cut it in half. Take one half and plug the pigtail into PIN# 9 of the headlight switch harness. (Optional: Take the other half of the wire and plug the pigtail into PIN# 8 of the headlight switch harness.) Connect the VW Wire part (Pin #9) to the fog wire you previously ran in step #3. Solder the connection. Wrap electrical tape around the solder connection and the end of the other wire to prevent short circuiting. Push the VW Wire part not being used into the dash. Install the Euroswitch into the dash. (Note: Pin #8 connects with Euroswitch Pin 'NL' = activated with the switch pulled out 1 click. Pin #9 connects with Euroswitch Pin 'NSL' = activated with the switch pulled out 2 clicks. You can connect the fog wire to Pin #8 if you wish to turn your rear fog on with the switch pulled out 1 click.) Step 5: Route the fog wire along the sill panels, out of sight, to the driver side tail lamp. Step 6: Open the driver side Tail Lamp Bulb Housing door/cover. Remove the driver side Tail Lamp Bulb Housing by squeezing the two tabs and pulling outwards. Plug a P21W bulb into the bottom left socket that is empty. Install the Tail Lamp Bulb Housing in the reverse manner you removed it. Step 7: Cut the wire you ran from the Euroswitch a few inches from the end. Connect the rear-end of the wire to the Cathode side of the Diode #1. Connect the front-end of the wire to the Anode side of the Diode #1. Crimp a small female connector to the end of the wire and wrap a piece of electrical tape around the connector to prevent any short circuiting. Locate the Red/Black brake light wire and connect the Anode side of Diode #2 to it. Between Diode #1 and the end of the wire, connect the Cathode side of Diode #2 to it. Solder and wrap electrical tape around each connection. Plug the connector onto PIN 'RF' and tuck any lose wiring underneath the housing. (click here for a wiring diagram) (alternate wiring diagram) Step 8: Open the passenger side Tail Lamp Bulb Housing door/cover. Remove the passenger side Tail Lamp Bulb Housing by squeezing the two tabs and pulling outwards. Plug a P21W bulb into the bottom right socket that is empty. Take the Jumper Cable you made in Step 1 and plug one end of the wire onto the pin labaled 'NSF' and the other end onto the pin labeled 'BR'. Install the Tail Lamp Bulb Housing in the reverse manner you removed it. Your finished! Enjoy your new mod and show all your friends what you can do |
